It is one of the advantages of living in Italy, I guess. A friend sent a WhatsApp message and suggested we meet for lunch at the weekend. So, a quick chat with the other half and we replied, saying that it sounded like a great idea and we would meet them there. Saturday arrived and we set off, fashionably late and headed 40 minutes up the road to the amazing city of Orvieto in Umbria to join the tourists, day-trippers and locals enjoying the end of the Italian summer.

Portraits are always intimate. By definition you are looking to capture something about a person which allows a facet of their personality to be shown and illuminated for others. They aren’t the rawness of street photography, but staged and self-conscious.

Street photography is not something I do much of - although I do enjoy it when I get the chance. It forces you to be observant, quick and brave. Brave, because a lot of people can get upset with you for taking pictures and at worst can get quite angry and threatening. I had read a number of reviews online of people demanding money from photographers for “taking their pictures” (as well as the horror stories of pickpockets, thieves and muggers roaming the streets of a lawless city at will).
